Meet The Artist: Noa Baranes

© Noa Baranes

I was born and I grew up in a small town in France, when I turned 18 I bought a one-way ticket to Australia, and have been travelling/living in different places until I found out that my home is in Israel. I am very passionate about travelling and creating. I recently started to teach myself the art of mandala and Hebrew calligraphy. I never went to university or took any kind of art course. I just learn by myself, the key being to practise a lot.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background.

I am 23 years old, I recently made Aliyah but I have been travelling to Africa and Central America with my husband for the last few months. We will be soon coming back to our home in Yad Binyamin.

What inspired you to become an artist?

Definitely my very talented father. I grew up watching him paint, making guitars, building motorcycles, etc.

What is your specialty?

I might still be looking for it, but for now, I think it would be mandalas mixed with Hebrew calligraphy.

How and where do you work?

I really don’t need much, I am currently travelling with a tiny pencil case full of pencils and a compass. And one thing I love about drawing is that I can do it anywhere.

What is the most indispensable item in your pencil case?

I would say a ruler and a compass, because I like things to be straight and balanced.

Where do you take your inspiration? Are you pursuing any themes?

Judaica is definitely a recurrent theme. I take inspiration from the ocean, the nature in general and other artists.

What projects are you currently working on?

My current project is to put up a proper website where people can purchase my artworks.

What is your favourite item in your current collection?

I don’t really have a favourite one but I like the hamsa I painted a while ago with gold paint on a black paper.

How do you know when a piece is finished?

I think that is something a lot of people are struggling with … we never really know if to keep on going or leaving it that way …

Do you do bespoke work?

Yes, I do, and I like the challenge.

What was the first artwork you ever sold?

It was a bunch of flowers in watercolor, I made it for a friend in Australia.

Which project have you enjoyed working on the most so far?

Painting on the wall of a hostel in South Africa was really fun.

What do you want to achieve with your work and what are your wishes for the future?

B’ezrat Hashem I wish to open a studio one day.

Where can we find your work?

I am currently working on my website but you can find my work on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/no.ita/
