Meet The Artist: Kiti Levi

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background.

Since I’ve been a child, I was attracted to the arts, but life has led me in different ways and in the early stages of my career, I finished a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Then, I worked in a bank, but my soul wanted the arts and at the age of 30, I made the turning point, left the stable bank position and went to study art at the Kibbutzim College (Seminar Ha’Kibutzim). The program I chose was “Art as theraputical tool in education”. Afterwards, I have ran workshops in community centres and in informal education of applied arts. At the same time, I have been painting intuitive drawings in acrylic paint on canvas and when I have presented it; my teacher told me that I paint mandalas. At this time, this word was not known and I did not know what she was talking about, so I went and investigated the culture of mandalas. This led me to Tibet and Nepal where I studied and specialised in guidance of traditional mandala. I took part in different art exhibitions in different parts of Israel with intuitive paintings and have ran workshop for drawing intuitive mandalas combined with translation and diagnosis.

About two years ago I continued to extend my arts studies and have studied Hebrew calligraphy. I have tried also Chinese and Japanese calligraphy, but Hebrew always felt like home. After a trip to Romania to discover my roots, I returned to Israel and felt the need to draw a mandala combined with letters, this is how what I call Mandalagraphia (Mandala combined with Calligraphy) was created and is now being taught in my studio in Kedron and on demand in different other parts of Israel. Following this, I developed cards called “Soul Circles” and “Blessing Circles” and now I am working on new cards called “Therapeutical Circles” combined with a pendulum.

In addition to that, I have written two singing books, in which the songs came to me after consciousness and self-search during spiritual communication. The book “Breathe for the heart” was published in 2010, while the book “Gift for the soul” was published in 2016 – both combine my photographs.

מאז היותי ילדה נמשכתי לאומנות, החיים הובילו אותי בדרכים אחרות, ובשלבים הראשונים של הקריירה שלי למדתי תואר ראשון במנהל עסקים ועבדתי בבנק אבל הנשמה שלי רצתה אומנות וכך בגיל 30 עשיתי את המפנה , עזבתי את הבנק ואת הקביעות והלכתי ללמוד אומנות בסמינר הקיבוצים, אומנות ככלי טיפולי חינוכי, לאחריה העברתי סדנאות במתנסים ובחינוך הלא פורמלי של אומנות שימושית, תוך כדי כך ציירתי ציור אינטואיטיבי בצבעי אקריליק על קנבס וכשהצגתי את ציוריי המורה שלי אמרה לי שאני מציירת מנדלות, בזמנו המילה הזו לא היתה מוכרת ולא ידעתי על מה היא מדברת, כך הלכתי וחקרתי את תרבות המנדלה, הגעתי לטיבט ונפאל ושם למדתי והתמחיתי בהנחייה של מנדלה מסורתית . השתתפתי בתערוכות ברחבי הארץ עם ציורי האינטואיטיבים והעברתי סדנאות לציור מנדלה אינטואיטיבית בשילוב פענוח ואבחון..לפני כשנתיים המשכתי להעמיק את הלמידה שלי בתחומי האומנות ולמדתי קליגרפיה עברית, התנסיתי גם בסינית ויפנית, אך העברית הרגישה לי את המקום שחזרתי הביתה. לאחר מסע שורשים לרומניה, חזרתי ארצה והרגשתי צורך לצייר מנדלה בשילוב האותיות, כך נוצרה והתפתחה לה שיטה שקראתי לה מנדליגרפיה, מנדלה בשילוב קליגרפיה, אותה אני מלמדת כיום בסטודיו שלי בקדרון וברחבי הארץ בהתאם להזמנה של סדנאות. בעקבות זאת פיתחתי קלפים שנקראים “מעגלי הנשמה” וקלפים “מעגלי הברכות” ועתה אני עובדת על קלפים חדשים שנקראים “מעגלי ריפוי ” בשילוב מטוטלת.. בנוסף כתבתי שני ספרי שירה, השירים הגיעו אליי לאחר תהליך של מודעות וחיפוש אישי, בתקשור. ספר השירה לנשום בשביל הלב יצא לאור בשנת 2010 וספר השירה מתנה לנשמה יצא לאור בשנת 2016 בספר זה משולבים צילומים שלי.

What is your specialty?

My speciality in art is multi-faceted and currently I combine with it my focus in Hebrew calligraphy, while creating meditative therapeutic tools for curing and improving quality of life.

ההתמחות שלי באומנות היא רב גונית, ויחד עם זאת , כרגע אני ממוקדת בתחום הקליגרפיה העברית ושילובה בתוך היצירה ככלי טיפולי מדיטטבי לריפוי ושיפור איכות החיים.

What inspired you to become an artist?

My inspiration to become an artist came from a place deep inside me that pulled me to colours and design that I have used in every part of my life. The colours are a source of inspiration and also nature and trips in nature combined with photographs wake in me the art that come into life.

ההשראה שלי להפוך לאומנית הגיעה ממקום עמוק בתוכי שמשך אותי תמיד לצבעים ולעיצוב, השתמשתי בכך בכל תחום בחיי, הצבעים הם מקור ההשראה שלי וכמו כן, הטבע, הטיולים בטבע בשילוב הצילומים מעוררים אצלי את האומנות לבוא לידי ביטוי.

How and where do you work?

I work in Moshav Kedron, this is my home, here I have my studio in which my work is presented and in which I run workshops and courses to teachers and the general public.

אני עובדת במושב קדרון, זה הבית שלי, שם יש לי סטודיו שבו מוצגות העבודות שלי וכן בו אני מעבירה חוגים וסדנאות וקורסים למורים ולקהל הרחב.

What are your favourite items in your current collection?

I love all my creations, I never sell my original creations, when people request to buy them I create additional ones or copies. At the moment I do not sell the original creation because I plan to have an exhibition after which I will be able to also release and sell the original creations. In the original creations, there is the energy and inspiration from The Great Mystery and from the divinity that the more I will try to recreate even with my skills I would note be able to create the exact same product.

אני אוהבת את כל היצירות שלי, היצירות המקוריות אני לא מוכרת, כשמבקשים ממני אני יוצרתיצירה נוספת או מכינה הדפסים. כרגע אני לא מוכרת את היצירה המקורית כי אני מתכננת לעשות תערוכה לאחריה אוכל לשחרר את היצירות המקוריות גם כן. יש ביצירה המקורית אנרגיה והשראה מהמיסתורין הגדול, מהאלוהות שככל שאנסה לעשות זאת שוב על אף המיומנות שיש ברשותי לא אצליח להגיע לאותו מוצר.

How do you know when a piece is finished?

I know when a piece is finished when I look at it and feel ‘that’s it” and that I do not have anything else to add. It is an internal feeling.

I work on all my creations in a completely intuitive way and give the colour the sentence, the word, to come to me in a fully intuitive way. I see the colours with my soul’s eyes, and the word I hear with my internal hearing. The sentences I get from the book of Psalms or the Bible from their source, the chapter and the line I get without knowing their meaning beforehand. Please note that I am note religious and was not raised in a religious house, and hence most of that I write after I receive them, I investigate and try to understand their meaning.

This reminds me that the reason I wanted to learn calligraphy was from a dream to write a Torah. As I learnt calligraphy, I realised that there is no way that I will be able to succeed in writing a Torah and I felt again that I have learnt something that I have nothing to do with. As the time passed, I combined the calligraphy in the mandala and this is how this art was created and developed – and is still being developed. I am thankful/joyful for it.

אני יודעת שהיצירה הסתיימה כאשר אני מתבוננת עליה ומרגישה שזהו , אין לי יותר מה להוסיף.זו הרגשה פנימית. אני עובדת על כל היצירות שלי בצורה אינטואיטיבית ונותנת לבחירת הצבע המשפט המילה להגיע אליי בדרך אינטואיטבית לחלוטין. את הצבעים אני רואה בעיני רוחי, את המילה אני שומעת בשמיעה פנימית ואת המשפטים שאני מקבלת מספר תהילים או מהתנך אני מקבלת על פי המקור שלהם , את הפרק ואת השורה מבלי לדעת לפני כן למה הכוונה. לציין שאינני דתיה ואף לא באה מבית דתי ולכן את רוב הדברים שאני כותבת לאחר שאני מקבלת אותם אני חוקרת ומנסה להבין את משמעותם. זה מזכיר לי שהסיבה שרציתי לללמוד קליגרפיה היתה מן חלום שכזה לכתוב ספר תורה, אך כשלמדתי את הקליגרפיה הבנתי שאין סיכוי שאצליח בכך והרגשתי ששוב למדתי משהו שאין לי מה לעשות איתו , לימים שילבתי את הקליגרפיה בתוך המנדלה וכך נוצרה לה אומנות שפיתחתי ועדיין מתפתחת דרכי. ואני מאושרת על כך.

Do you do bespoke work?

All my creations I have drawn intuitively I sold in a house sale, after which, I have dealt with masks and sold my creations in exhibition in which I exhibited. And also my mandalas. These days I also sell all my creations.

את כל היצירות שלי שציירתי ציור אינטויאיטיבי מכרתי במכירה ביתית, לאחר מכן, עסקתי במסכות ומכרתי יצירה שלי בתערוכה בה השתתפתי . וכן את המנדלות שלי. כיום אני מוכרת את כל היצירות שלי.

Which project have you enjoyed working on the most so far?

I loved the most working on the Card project of my art – it felt to me that anyone can own art without a lot of money and get the echo, colours and words directly through the cards and at the same time it gives me a lot of joy to be able to touch so many people.

הכי אהבתי לעבוד על פרוייקט יצירת הקלפים של האומנות שלי, זה הרגיש לי שהנה כל אחד יכול להגיע לאומנות בלי הרבה כסף ולקבל את הדהוד הצבעים והמילים ישירות דרך הקלפים וזה נתן לי סיפוק ואושר גדול לגעת בכל כך הרבה אנשים.

What do you want to achieve with your work and what are your wishes for the future?

I would like to see my art getting to kids around the country, to schools that teach calligraphy that is combined with mandala. To give them this hour that doesn’t have to be perfect and that it is possible to have art and that everything that comes out is the best that can be for you. I would like the Mandalagraphia art to spread around the country (of Israel) and to have a huge exhibition of all these creations on a huge wall that is full with Manalagraphias.

הייתי רוצה לראות את האומנות שלי מגיעה לילדים ברחבי הארץ, בבתי ספר שמקיימים שיעור קליגרפיה בשילוב מנדלה, לתת להם את השעה הזו שאין צורך להיות מושלמים שאפשר להיות באומנות וכל מה שיוצא זה הכי טוב שאפשר ויכול להיות עבורך. הייתי רוצה שהאומנות הזו של המנדליגרפיה תופץ ברחבי הארץ ותתקיים תערוכה ענקית של כל היצירות האלה על קיר ענק עם מלא מלא מנדליגרפיות.
