Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background.
My name is Shimon Yurkovsky. I was born in the city of Odessa, which is in Ukraine and not in Texas, I also live there. I am 28 years old and happily married. After graduating from the Jewish school, I have studied for three years in a Yeshiva in New York, America. After I returned to Odessa, I entered the Department of Graphic Design at University. I successfully graduated and work in my profession. I create logos, corporate branding, and different types of printing, and for a while already, I have been working on designing and producing Jewish items, Judaica.
Меня зовут Шимон Юрковский я родился и живу в городе Одесса, который в Украине, не в Техасе. Мне 28 лет и к счастью женат. После окончания еврейской школы, учился три года в йешиве в Америке, в городе Нью Йорке. После вернулся в Одессу и поступил в университет на факультет Графический дизайн. Успешно закончил и работаю по профессии. Делаю логотипы, фирменный стиль и разную полиграфии и с не давнего времени занимаюсь дизайном и производством еврейской атрибутики (иудаики).
What inspired you to become an artist?
That you can bring your thoughts and ideas to life, and that they become material and other people can see them.
То-что ты можешь воплотить свои мысли, идеи в жизнь, они могут стать материальными и их могут увидеть остальные люди.
What is your specialty?
Currently, I work with different types of wood and a very interesting material called epoxy resin, which is a unique material with a lot of potential. In combination with wood, unique Judaica products are being obtained.
Сейчас работаю с разными породами дерева и очень интересным материалом, эпоксидной смолой, уникальный материал с большим потенциалом, в сочетание с деревом получаются очень уникальные изделия для иудаики.
How and where do you work?
I start working after lunch, as until lunch I still study at Kollel. I work in my small home studio.
Я начиняю работать после обеда, так как я до обеда учусь еще в колеле. Работаю в своей не большой домашней мастерской.
What is the most indispensable item in your studio?
In the past, I would have said that it is a pencil and a notebook, but nowadays it is a computer. Before starting to do anything with the material, I always make a sketch and project design of the future product on the computer.
Раньше я бы ответил, что карандаш и блокнот, но сейчас это все-таки компьютер. Перед тем как начинать что-то делать в материале, с начало обязательно делаю наброски и проектирую дизайн будущего изделия на компьютере.
Where do you take your inspiration? Are you pursuing any themes?
As probably every artist, I can get inspiration from everywhere; very often good ideas come to me on the street, when I observe what surrounds me. I can find lots of interesting thrilling things. Interestingly enough, many good ideas also come to me on Shabbat, because my mind is not busy with the daily routine. Currently, I am fascinated by Judaica, and I want to further develop this, and hope that it will lead me to something big.
Как наверно и у всех художников вдохновение может прийти отовсюду, чаще всего хорошие идеи приходят на улице, когда хожу всегда рассматриваю, то что меня окружает, можно подменить много интересных вдохновляющих вещей, как не странно, много хороших идей приходят в шабат, наверно из-за что мысли не заняты будничной рутиной. Сейчас меня очень увлекла тема иудаики, хочу дальше в этом развиваться и надеюсь что это приведет к чему то большому.
What projects are you currently working on?
Currently, I am working on a Shabbat board. It’s a very interesting project, which will be available soon.
Сейчас работаю над шабатней доской. Очень интересный проект, который скоро уже можно будет увидеть, оставайтесь в курсе.
What is your favourite item in your current collection?
Not so long ago, my friend moved to Israel, and I made him a door sign with his family’s last name, in my style. It was a nice gift for him.
Не так давно мой друг переехал жить в Израиль, и я ему на новоселье сделал табличку на дверь с фамилией его семьи в моём стиле. Был приятный для него подарок.
How do you know when a piece is finished?
Yes, it is always difficult – I think that for every artist to understand the moment, when “everything must stop and freeze”! comes with experience and you begin to understand at what point the work is done and nothing needs to be added.
Да это всегда сложно, думаю для каждого художники понять этот момент, что «Все надо остановиться, готово»! Это приходит с опытом и ты начинаешь понимать, когда работа уже самодостаточная и ей больше ничего не надо добавлять.
Do you do bespoke work?
Yes, by the way, before Passover, I designed bespoke Seder plates, which will also be available soon.
Да, вот кстати делал перед Песахом на заказ Киару (пасхальное блюда), которое тоже скоро можно будет увидеть.
What was the first artwork you ever sold?
I am not sure if this can be considered my first work of art, since the quality of it was rather low, but it was the logo for some sort of rock band, which in principle corresponded to my creativity and logotype.
Не уверен, что это можно считать первым моим произведением искусства, так как качество его исполнения было уж очень низким, это был логотип для какой то рок группы, которая в принципе соответствовала моему логотипу своим творчеством
Which project have you enjoyed working on the most so far?
Mezuzahs, I just enjoy making them.
Мезузы, просто нравится их делать.
What do you want to achieve with your work and what are your wishes for the future?
I hope to be able to design all the ideas I have for Judaica, and to create a great brand that will bring much joy to our customers.
Надеюсь получиться воплотить все мои идеи, которые у меня есть для иудики и получиться создать большой классный бренд, который будет приносить радость и пользу нашим покупателем.
